Earning Your Turns Before Most People Have Had Their 1st Cup of Coffee

Breckenridge lodging6:15AM is an early hour to hear "BUZZ BUZZ" coming from your alarm clock, but what about "ON YOUR MARK ... GET SET ... GO!!"

Just under 40 people were lined up at the starting line, waiting to hear those words this morning at 6:15 in Breckenridge. They were all participants in the Ascent Race Series, which is a race up the ski runs with the finish line at the Vista Haus. You can use any method (skinning, snowshoeing, x-c skiing, etc.) of getting up the mountain, but you must have skies or a snowboard to get down.

Today's race was not only the 1st Ascent Race of the season, but also the 1st MORNING race for the SERIES!! Last winter, the Ascent Races were in the evenings, giving the participants a view of the sunset as they made their way up the mountain. The Town of Breckenridge held the 1st Ascent Race Series last year, and it was a success. Some locals came out in t-shirts and leggings to bring home the victory while others were just out getting in their daily exercise at an enjoyable pace. This year, the series grew to include 6 races spanning from January to late April. The 1st 2 races have start times of 6:15AM ... which may sound early to most of the world, but to the "Breckenridge Skinners" this is the perfect time to get their work-out in and take a run down the mountain. They will tell you, "We earn our turns!"

Having been a participant last year and now this year, I can testify that this is a refreshingly different way to experience the mountain. The chairlifts are still, the crowds are gone, and you can actually hear the birds chirping ... cheering you on!!!
